Tarot is a Gift

tarot is a gift

The tarot is many things to many people. For me and countless others, it is a metaphysical tool to access insights, wisdom and an understanding of personal situations or challenges. I believe that tarot is a gift that allows us to enjoy our lives on a deeper level and to make decisions that help us to live our best lives.

What tarot means to me as a tarot intuitive?

First of all, I want to explain what I mean by being a tarot intuitive or reading tarot intuitively. Each of us perceives and interacts with the world differently and our individual experiences are unique. Having said that, there are common threads that run through our life experiences. In tarot, these experiences are presented in symbols and archetypes. At their simplest, tarot cards are representations of life events, our own growth, opportunities, challenges and the people in our lives. Tarot is a tool that allows us to connect with a universal wisdom that has been available for centuries. The cards allow us to uncover different perspectives and a deeper understanding of our individual situation.

I have always been intuitive. It is a big part of who I am, how I experience the world and how deeply affected I am by what is going on around me. I started reading tarot in 1998. At the time it was a way for me to look at some of the challenges I was going through and see them through a different lens, a way of looking at things beyond the surface of a given situation.

From the very first time I tried to do a reading for myself using the Celtic Cross tarot spread, I was blown away with the messages I was getting. It literally gave me goosebumps. It was like having access to a spiritual guide that wanted to help me understand what I was having trouble acknowledging or understanding. Those first readings were done using the meanings of certain positions in the spread (what a particular card would be relating to) and the meaning written in the little guidebook that came with the tarot deck and just reflecting on how it applied to the situation I was in. That was the beginning of a deep and lengthy relationship that first took me from collecting tarot decks that I was attracted to, an extensive study of the tarot and the creation of my own tarot deck. I went from reading for myself, close friends and family to read for strangers and each and every time I continue to be amazed at how accurate and validating tarot can be for anyone looking for answers and direction. Tarot is a gift that gives each time you connect with it.

My list of the Three Greatest Gifts of Tarot

#1. Tarot can help you to connect with and develop your intuition

One of the gifts of tarot is that it allows you to really connect with your intuition. It is an amazing tool to develop the skill of sensing things that descriptions in a book, or memorizing the meanings of cards can not begin to touch. Intuition is like any skill, the more you use it and practice the easier and stronger it becomes. Intuition helps to guide us to make the best decisions, to understand the complex and gives us the ability to continue to move forward when things seem uncertain. Building and developing your intuition is an important step in self-development and following your own path and purpose.

I believe that intuition is the connection between your heart and emotions, your mind and thoughts and the wisdom of your spirit and soul.

As an intuitive reader, the tarot has offered me the gift of insight and guidance that allows me to experience life in a richer way, knowing myself, believing in myself and recognizing the wisdom this sixth sense offers. It has opened the door for me to connect with complete strangers and have a profound effect, connecting at a heart level, offering understanding, validation, wisdom, and hope.

The High Priestess card in the Rainbow Travellers Tarot is just one of the cards that will invite you to connect with your intuition.

#2. Tarot can help you to connect with spirit

For me, one of the things that happened as I continued to reach for my tarot deck and began to study the artwork and books that were connected with the tarot was a deepening of my own spiritual beliefs. I never felt like I fit into any “defined religions” and often the very nature of a church or belief system that tried to tell me theirs was the only truth…. that just never sat very well with me. So I studied many different beliefs, many spiritual practices and came home to myself and my own connection to spirit. I use that term in a way that means connecting with the Divine, that spiritual essence that connects all living beings, all magical beings, ascended masters, spirit guides, and is centered in love and acceptance of diversity without prejudice.

Tarot is a gift that has helped me to find and connect with my own guides as they often show up with something important to share even if I at first doubted the message. I quickly learned that sometimes part of believing is trusting. Trusting that there are answers to questions and guides that will help us to find those answers if we are open to it. My journey with tarot continues to be a big part of my spiritual journey and development. It has awakened a strong sense of faith that goes beyond a single religion. Tarot is a gift that has allowed me to connect and get to know my own guides and to better understand why some jobs and situations were so toxic for me. I truly believe that there is a universal wisdom that is available to us that wants to support us and help to make choices that that are for our greater good. The Universe card was created with that in mind.

#3. Tarot can help you to feel validated and empowered

There is no denying the fact that almost 100% of the time I do a reading that somehow the right cards come out that have a special meaning for the person the reading is for. Like all readers, I have had the odd person who asked for a reading and sat across from me and just scowled not wanting to hear anything and that is OK. For the rest and largest majority, most often the messages are validating. People are often surprised when you tell them that you see they have been struggling with something in particular. They are blown away when you approach what they are going through with compassion and understanding. Often the messages that come forth encourage them to do something they have had a feeling about but, just couldn’t give themselves permission to do or believe. Somehow when a shuffle of a deck of 78 cards brings forth messages of something they have been struggling with comes to light; they feel empowered to take those steps forward. Life can be difficult and tarot is a gift that can be insightful and supportive of changes we need to make in our lives. I believe that sometimes people just need someone to walk with them, whether it is on a path of healing, or at a time they find themselves at a crossroads. Reaching out and finding there is comfort and support when you need it makes all the difference in the world. Tarot is a gift that allows us to connect in this way. Sharing the wisdom and messages in a reading can help someone to feel heard, understood and give them permission to move forward. When I created the Wheel in the major arcana, it was with the intention that people recognize the part they play in their own destiny. The woman in the card is taking hold of the wheels of the clock. She is stepping forward to make the changes that lead to where she has always wanted to be.
